After your safety briefing and paddling instruction you will kayak around the Waitemata harbour, meaning 'sparkling waters', where you may see wildlife such as Little Blue Penguins and Cooks Petrels.

Start your journey at St Marys Bay, just a short stroll from Viaduct Harbour, Wynyard Quarter, and Central Auckland. Paddle alongside Westhaven Marina, taking in the citys skyline and vibrant waterfront as you glide through the calm waters of the Waitemat Harbour.

Paddle alongside the marina, taking in the iconic Sky Tower and vibrant city skyline reflecting on the tranquil waters. As one of Aucklands premier daytime kayaking experiences, it combines the excitement of urban exploration with the serenity of paddling on the water.

Instructions
  • Suitable for all fitness levels. No prior kayaking experience is necessary. The ability to swim is not necessary and full instruction will be given.
  • This activity does involve some degree of risk and you may be required to accept and sign a risk disclosure document before you take part in the activity. Thank you.
  • We travel in small group of up to just 8 persons with your own guide.
  • You need to bring sun protection, water shoes or sandals, and a sense of adventure!

Restrictions
  • All tours are conducted in English, and participants must be able to speak and understand English to follow safety instructions and engage with the guide.
  • Due to the availability of the buoyancy aids and the kayak design there is a maximum weight limit of 135kg.
  • Participants must be within a weight limit of 120 kg to fit comfortably and safely in our kayaks, which have a seat width of 65 cm. Guides must be able to safely assist clients back into a kayak in the rare event of a capsize.
  • This tour is only available for those 12 years of age or older.
  • Tours require participants to sit and paddle for up to 45 minutes without breaks for stretching or getting out of the kayak.

    Do I need to be able to swim?

No this is not a requirement, you will be wearing a buoyancy aid for your safety.

    Are chidlren under 12 allowed on this tour?

Wchildren younger than 12 are allowed on this tour IF booked as a private tour in advance. On public departures children must be 12 or older.

    Do you still run the tour in bad weather?

Auckland weather is usually good for our kayak trips throughout the year. But as your safety is paramount we do reserve the right to cancel or amend any tour due to weather conditions. If we have to cancel a tour due to such circumstances, you will receive a full refund. If the tour has started and the tour needs to be changed due to safety requirements then you may receive a slight discount on the tour at the guides discretion. This happens very rarely though.

    Is it a safe tour?

Sea kayaking have inherent risks and can be dangerous. Detailed risk management and strict safety procedures are observed and we are an approved Outdoor Pursuits operator. However there still remains an element of risk and we cannot absolutely guarantee participants' safety. You will be required to sign a liability form to this effect before starting a tour.

    Are you a certified operator?

Yes, we are and have complied fully with the Adventure Sport Certification process for New Zealand. We are current members of the Sea Kayak Operators Association of New Zealand; complying with their Code of Practice and Operating Procedures. We operate with Department of Conservation concessions and Auckland Council permits.

    What type of kayaks do you use?

Our equipment for kayaking is purchased, maintained and replaced with an ongoing assessment of its condition. Our kayaks are made in New Zealand for New Zealand conditions and is made from high quality supa-link polyethylene plastic to give it excellent shape and durability.

    What is the ratio of guides to clients?

Our ratio is one guide to eight clients

    Are these single or double kayaks?

These are double kayaks as we can explore further in a shorter period of time.

    How long is the walk from Auckland CBD to the departure point at Z Pier?

The walk from Auckland CBD to Westhaven Marina, Z Pier, takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on your starting location and walking speed. Its a scenic route, passing through the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter.
